Jonathan Rea is hoping he can give his World Superbike Championship season a significant boost from Valencia onwards as he prepares to debut Ten Kate Honda's new electronics package.

The Northern Irishman has had a less-than-perfect start to the year, with a retirement during the second race in Portugal putting him on the back foot in his quest to challenge for this season's title.

Nonetheless, having stayed on at Portimao to trial new electronics for his Honda CBR1000RR, Rea is confident the new system will enable him to get back to the front and challenge for wins again in Spain.

"Valencia is a circuit that I've never really gone well at but we had a decent test there last December. It's going to be really interesting to roll out the new electronics package that we tested after the races at Portimao last week - I'm excited because they felt pretty good in the test and I'm intrigued to see how they go at Valencia.

"The start to the season has been OK, apart from that technical problem we had last time out. I've been getting steady points so far, but now we need to be at the front. Luck has to fall in our favour sometime, so hopefully it'll be at Valencia."

With a scorecard of 4-6-3-DNF, Rea is currently sixth in the overall standings, 46 points behind early leader Leon Haslam.
