Camier makes mark despite double crash

The reigning British Superbike Champion crashes out of both Valencia races, but shows his hand by 'leading' on the track for much of race two
Leon Camier was taking positives away from his latest World Superbike performance in Spain, despite failing to finish either race.

The Aprilia rider crashed heavily in both races, but made waves nonetheless with two superb rides that could even have seen him celebrating a first WSBK podium finish.

Recovering from his lowly 13th place starting position, an aggressive first few laps saw Camier get as high as fifth during the opening race, only for him to lose the front-end of the RSV4 under braking for turn seven.

Skating across the circuit – and almost collecting the bikes in front of him – Camier was lucky to escape injury, but was disappointed with the race's outcome.

"I was pushing quite hard when I fell,” he said. “I braked hard over a depression and I lost the front end. There is work to be done if we want to compete with the leaders, especially in braking and covering the turns.”

Camier would go on to make even more of a mark in race two when a superb start from seventh – a consequence of the restart – catapulted him into second before he leapfrogged past team-mate Max Biaggi to lead a World Superbike race for the first time.

Although the aggregate times meant Camier never rose higher than third on the timing screens, it did suggest he was on course for a first podium finish at this level. Unfortunately, having resisted pressure from Biaggi for almost half of the race, a mistake over the brow heading into the final turn saw him crash out.

Nonetheless, while Camier admits he needs to find better consistency, he is now certain that a good result is 'not far off'

"I still have a lot to figure out. I especially need to improve the feeling with my RSV4 and I need to understand where and how to intervene to stay consistently out front with the leaders.

“There are a lot of little things that need to be adjusted and they are decisive in order to be quick. I believe that this weekend we took some important steps in this direction. A good result is not far off.”

Been watching Leon come up through the ranks for the past few years. I agree - superb talent for the future, our brightest hope, you might say. Once he gets his head round the bike, he'll worry most of the top guys this year & challenge for the title next year.
