A new, safer chicane will greet the riders for the first time when World Superbike action gets underway at Monza later today as organisers look to avoid a repeat of the carnage that marred last year's event.

Although the legendary Italian circuit has been a popular draw for riders and fans over the years, calls were made to revise the tight right-left Prima Variante chicane at the end of the home straight after a massive first turn accident left Max Neukirchner and Makoto Tamada badly injured.

Neukirchner suffered a broken leg when he was harpooned by Brendan Roberts' rider-less Ducati as it skated across the grass and entered into the German rider's path.

Additionally, Tamada, who was involved in the clash that prompted Roberts to fall from his bike, broke his wrist, while a separate accident just behind for Troy Corser and Tommy Hill would subsequently rule four of the five riders out for the next event through injury.

For 2010 though, organisers have opened up the chicane slightly in a bid to prevent a bottleneck through the opening laps. The circuit is now 16 metres shorter, but does little to alter Monza's infamous high-speed nature.

The layout was put to the test for the first time during a CIV Superbike event just a week ago, with most riders labelling the changes as a success.

Lap times are expected to come down substantially as a result.
