Rea delighted to secure podium finish

The Northern Irishman scores an unlikely second place finish after a battling ride from 11th on the grid
Jonathan Rea refused to be disheartened to miss out on victory at Kyalami, joking that he would have 'taken an arm off' if he'd have been offered a second and fifth place pair of results.

The Northern Irishman overturned a disappointing grid position of 11th to snatch the lead on lap two of the second race, a position he would hold onto for almost the race's entirety.

However, the race would prove just two laps too long for Rea as he was overtaken by Leon Haslam, forcing him to settle for second.

Nonetheless, following on from a fifth place finish in race one, Rea was delighted with a positive end following a difficult start to the weekend.

“We made a small change for race two and then I got a blinding start. From there I found it easy to go to the front but it was really difficult to make a break. In the end, Haslam made a lunge and I had to settle for second.

“All in all, I would have taken your arm off if you'd offered me those results this morning and I'd like to thank the team for keeping my spirits up – it wasn't looking too clever after warm-up. I'm really looking forward to Salt Lake City now that we're back on the podium.

“I got a good start in the first race but just couldn't hold the other guys as I didn't find any grip. But even when I dropped down to ninth with quite a gap in front, I didn't give up on a single corner or a single straight. I was able to maintain pretty consistent laps which allowed me to catch and pass the others at the end.”

Rea remains joint third with Carlos Checa in the overall standings.

Performance of the weekend for me. Struggled for the right set-up for Kyalami and might've been really disheartened after qualifying. He and his team seem to pull things out when it gets tough though.

That may be right Time Tells but where are the other hondas especially neukirchner? I think he has immense talent and love to see him ride a bike. Of course he looked like he'd been hit with a wet fish - he rode an amazing race and got mugged at the end by an equally amazing haslam. People forget he is only 23 and has only been doing short circuit for 7 or so years - haslam has a few more year experience. Brilliant riding yesterday by Jonathan & Leon - love to see these two battle :)
