Michele Pirro has taken his second career World Supersport pole position exactly a year after his first after getting the better of Eugene Laverty at Misano.

Pirro was the surprise front runner after qualifying at Misano last season, the local rider's performance that day on privateer Lorenzini Yamaha going a long way to securing his seat at Ten Kate Honda for 2010.

Twelve months on and Pirro is celebrating pole position around the Adriatic circuit once again after prevailing in a fight with Laverty and wild-card competitor Roberto Tamburini.

The little-known Tamburini, riding a Yamaha this weekend, looked on course for a shock result as he moved to the top of the timesheets with just over five minutes remaining, only for Laverty to knock him down to second.

However, the Irishman had no answer to Pirro's 1min 38.444secs, two tenths quicker than the Parkalgar Honda man.

Helpfully for Laverty though, key title rival Kenan Sofuoglu will start behind him in sixth after the Turk couldn't improve on his pace setting lap from Q1, the Turk being edged by Kawasaki's Joan Lascorz and also by the increasingly competitive Gino Rea on the Intermoto Honda.

Chaz Davies will start as the top Triumph in seventh having dabbled towards the front of the field early on, ahead of Massimo Roccoli, Robbin Harms and Fabien Foret.
