WSS: Rea secures career best fourth

The reigning Superstock 600 champion records his best World Supersport finish of the season at Brno with a run to fourth.
Gino Rea's admits he was 'pretty annoyed' to fall just a few tenths short of a maiden World Supersport Championship podium result following a feisty ride at Brno.

The young Briton was on fine form around his Intermoto Czech Honda throughout the weekend, Rea determined to give his team a good result on home soil and put the disappointment of being taken out of the previous event at Misano.

Qualifying on the second row, Rea got a superb start to run at the head of the field for a time, but while he would drop to fourth shortly afterwards, he maintained a good pace to run at the front.

Eventually becoming embroiled in an exchange with countryman Chaz Davies for third, although Rea was delighted with his run to fourth, he remained frustrated at being unable to find a way past the oil-leaking Triumph.

'I'm glad I could bring the team a strong result at their home race as it means a lot for them, but at the same time I'm pretty annoyed I didn't get on the podium, especially when I feel we could have.

“We worked very hard to get a good race set up and I felt comfortable running up there with the leaders. Unfortunately, the traction control stopped working before I went out in the race, which made it difficult.

“We had spent all weekend setting it up, you have to find the confidence to ride with it. So when it stops before the race, you have to adapt very quickly back to using just your wrist to control slides, otherwise you will get chucked off and sent to the moon. It takes a lot of concentration.

“Apart from that, I had good pace during the race, I just couldn't get close enough to Chaz to make a pass. He was leaking a bit of oil, so at times when I followed him close in the corners, I had some big slides from the front and the rear.

“I tried to get around the outside of Chaz to go up the inside on the final corner of the last lap, but I had a big rear slide and almost crashed, so that put a stop to the podium chance.”

Rea's result puts him seventh in the standings, just five points from fifth overall.
