Vermeulen has knee surgery

The former MotoGP rider turns his attentions towards his recovery after having surgery on his troublesome knee.
Chris Vermeulen has begun on the long road to recovery after undergoing corrective surgery on his injured knee.

The Australian will sit out the remainder of the 2010 World Superbike season after taking the decision to go under the knife to reconstruct the knee he injured in an accident at Phillip Island in March.

The Kawasaki rider has been told he will not be able to bend or put weight on the knee for three weeks and faces up to four months in rehabilitation, where by he is hoping to return in time to begin development of the 2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R.

"The operation lasted for two and a half hours but it was supposed to be shorter than that,” he said. “They found more damage in there than they thought they would after looking at the scans. But they went in there and fixed it, it is all reconstructed now and on Friday I should get my stitches out. I am not allowed to bend it or put any weight on it for three weeks."

"The idea was to make sure the healing process would be permanent, so that's why we stopped and fixed everything that was wrong in there," said Chris. "The physiotherapy should be quite hard and intense when it starts, but hopefully I will have a knee that will be as good as it was before the crash."

Kawasaki mainstay Akira Yanagawa will replace Vermeulen for this weekend's round of the World Superbike Championship.
