Eugene Laverty has singled himself out as the early man to beat at Silverstone after topping opening World Supersport free practice by six tenths of a second.
The Irishman – who has sampled the revised circuit before - was in charge throughout, at one stage proving more than a second faster than his nearest rivals. While Joan Lascorz got close late on, Laverty simply pulled away again to be the only rider to dip below 2mins 11secs.
With an influx of wild-card riders swelling the Supersport grid to 28 this weekend, there were a few unfamiliar names getting up at the front as British Supersport title contenders Billy McConnell and James Westmoreland posted the third and fifth fastest times on their CAME Yamahas.
The pair would be split by Miguel Praia, who was an impressive fourth best on the Parkalgar Honda, while Westmoreland led a trio of British riders with Gino Rea and Chaz Davies in sixth and seventh positions.
Having impressed on his wild-card outing at Misano, Roberto Tamburini is back in World Supersport action this weekend to bolster Yamaha's entry, the Italian setting the eighth fastest time
Respective World and British Supersport leaders Kenan Sofuoglu and Sam Lowes completed the top ten, while the latter's brother Alex was 19th fastest on the Seton Yamaha.
Elsewhere, Ronan Quarmby – who rides the Ten Kate Honda in place of the injured Michele Pirro – was 15th best, while the remaining wild-card performers of Max Hunt, Jenny Tinmouth, Christian Iddon and Ian Lowry were 21st, 25th, 26th and 27th respectively.
