Home pole for Crutchlow at Silverstone

Crutchlow ends the session seven tenths up on Rea, with Fabrizio and Smrz making it four different manufacturers on the front row.
Cal Crutchlow will start from a World Superbike pole position for the fifth time this season after dominating proceedings over a single lap once again at Silverstone.

Maintaining his remarkable record over a single revolution this season, Crutchlow pumped in a lap of 2mins 04.091secs with his first SP3 effort and was never challenged.

Leading a British 1-2 with Jonathan Rea in second place, the Ten Kate Honda rider was a distant seven tenths off Crutchlow's pace, but remains poised alongside his countryman.

Having topped qualifying coming into the Superpole session, Crutchlow – who is yet to win a race this season - proved once again that he is the man to beat over a single lap as he topped all three phases of the session.

Getting faster with each phase, Crutchlow's opening effort in SP3 was more than enough for him to add to his Portimao, Valencia, Kyalami and Brno Superpole trophies.

Recording a lap time that would have placed him fifth on the MotoGP grid at Silverstone earlier this year, his closest – albeit still very distant – challenger was Rea, who maintained strong pace in second position as the only other rider to even get below 2mins 05secs.

They will be joined on the front row by Michel Fabrizio, who stepped up his pace haven't spent time getting acquainted with the circuit, and Jakub Smrz, who leapt up the leaderboard to get a front row in only his second event with the Aprilia RSV-4.

The Czech's performance was all the more impressive given he out-qualified factory Aprilia rider Max Biaggi, the Italian securing sixth place behind title rival Leon Haslam, but only after scraping into the SP3 session in the first place. Rounding out the SP3 participants, BMW got both of its riders onto the front two rows, although Troy Corser and Ruben Xaus couldn't manage any higher than seventh and eighth once there.

As ever, the battle to make it into the shootout was closely fought, with some notable names missing out on the chance to challenge for pole position.

The track is slower than when GP'S went to silverstone as it has rained between the sessions. also the bridgestones have more grip. so..... whats the point of motogp? is it? a, to make riders feel they are special and that they can do what they want. b. make more money with non existant presitige of being superior? c. charge punters a fortune in gate prices and merchandise for hald empty grids and produce boring racing. d. all of the above the answer is D.
