WSS: Pirro takes points on Moto2 debut

Michele Pirro qualifies eighth and scores points following a guest Moto2 outing with Gresini Racing at Motorland Aragon.
Michele Pirro gave his motorcycling CV a boost over the weekend by scoring points on his Moto2 World Championship debut at the Motorland Aragon circuit.

Pirro, currently eighth in the World Supersport Championship standings with Ten Kate Honda, stepped in alongside Moto2 leader Toni Elias at Gresini Racing as a replacement for the injured Vladimir Ivanov.

The Italian qualified strongly to start in eighth – ahead of Elias -, but an existing wrist injury would stymie him over a long distance, Pirro crossing the line in an eventual 14th position.

Nonetheless, having already matched Ivanov's best finish in Moto2, Pirro was overall pleased with his maiden outing.

“My wrist is incredibly painful. It wasn't too bad up to the final laps but then it was unbearable, but I am happy I made it to the end and for me this has been a fantastic experience. I want to thank the team for giving me this opportunity and I'm just sorry I couldn't do more because of the wrist.”

Good on him. But better than that, I think this very much sets a precedent for his current team mate Kenan Sofuoglu. Now I have no doubt he can be a top 5 contender in Moto2 right from the go - if he succesfully completes the move.

I reckon Pirro had a top ten finish in him without the injury. But if Pirro can do this on his maiden outing, imagine what Laverty could have done in a season. I still think that Eugene should have gone to Moto2, he would have had a good ride in MotoGP within a couple of years. Despite that, I'm still looking forward to some pretty sparkling rides in WSBK.
