Checa hails double Imola victory

Carlos Checa celebrates his new Althea Ducati contract by winning both races at Imola after two fighting rides from ninth.
On the weekend that he penned a new deal with Althea Racing for the next two seasons, Carlos Checa completed the fourth and fifth wins of his World Superbike career with a superb double victory at Imola.

Winning on each occasion from ninth on the grid, Checa was the dominant force in dry conditions around the Italian circuit as fought his way back into contention before striding away into the lead and scoring the fastest lap of both races.

Lauding it as the best day of what has been a long motorcycling career, Checa's maximum points haul puts him back on the tail of Jonathan Rea in the battle for third position overall and goes some way to making up for his double DNF whilst leading at Miller Motorsports Park.

“It is the best day of my career”, the Spaniard said. “Everything went perfectly and I know that I rode two of the best races of my life. Superpole didn't reflect my earlier performance but in the races everything came together again, thanks to a strong start and a great pace. I feel great.

“The affection of my many fans, the feeling with my team that I thank for enabling me to score this incredible result, and the fact that I have done the double at Ducati's, and Team Althea Racing's, home track. I would like to congratulate Max on his title win but it has been a fantastic weekend for us too. We're going to enjoy the moment.”

Additionally, it helped Ducati to its best results of the season to lift them up to second position in the manufacturers' standing, ahead of Suzuki.

What a rider! It's a shame he lost 50 almost sure points in Salt Lake City and crashed from 1st place in Valencia... Hope he will fight for the championship next year!

What a great story. That is, Carlos Checa's racing career is a great story and I have nothing but the strongest admiration for the man. Never seeks self glorification, never has a negative word, never assigns blame for problems that are not his fault like in Salt Lake when the double was his for sure. The man quietly get on with it. He's a credit to the sport
