Max Biaggi gave the 2011 iteration of the World Superbike Championship-winning RSV-4 a good debut by topping the timesheets during testing at Phillip Island.

The Italian was in Australia sampling an evolution of the step engine, a different swing-arm and new engine mounts, the recently crowned champion setting a best lap of 1min 32.4secs.

Though six tenths off the lap record held by Troy Corser, the test was hampered by cool and very windy conditions.

It was weather that affected Biaggi's countryman Marco Melandri as he struggled with set-up on the 2010 Sterilgarda Yamaha R1, as well as teething issues with the 2011 machine. He would come away with a best lap of 1min 33.5secs.

Between them, Melandri's team-mate Eugene Laverty was second fastest with 1min 32.9secs, while Leon Camier managed a 1min 33.4secs on the second of the Aprilias.
