Yamaha is confident Marco Melandri will be close to full fitness when official World Superbike testing gets underway in January after going under the knife to correct a shoulder complaint.

Melandri has been the subject of speculation regarding his condition in recent weeks after taking to Twitter to reveal problems with his shoulder, a consequence of an injury sustained earlier in the season.

Most recently posting 'Bad present for Christmas... For sure better now than in a month... Hope to be ready for round 1...', Yamaha has since revealed that Melandri underwent a minor surgery to 'clean up' the limb and prevent further aggravation over the season.

Nonetheless, while Yamaha admit Melandri - who requires the use of a brace for two weeks - will have to ease off from training during the month of January, it is satisfied that the Italian will be present for the first official pre-season test at Portimao towards the end of the month.

The surgery, which took place in Italy, was taken out by Dr Giuseppe Porcellini - the doctor that worked on the shoulder of Valentino Rossi recently.
