Rea unconcerned by Portimao wash-out

31 January 2011

Jonathan Rea says isn't worried about the lack of dry weather running during the first official World Superbike test of the season at Portimao, insisting he and the Castrol Honda team are feeling well prepared.

Rea arrived in Portugal keen to get his 2011 campaign underway after a private test outing at Motorland Aragon was scuppered by poor weather. However, it was a similar situation in Portimao, with just one of the three days not being blighted by rain.

Despite this, Rea was pleased with his pace, the Northern Irishman topping one of the six sessions and coming close to securing the fastest time overall.

“It's been good at Portimao,” he said. “We didn't get the best testing weather – we wanted dry days, really, to try and progress the bike. We had some new things to try and, to be honest, I think we got two sessions, but we were pretty much at the sharp end in both of them. In the wet we were really fast as well, so I'm really happy with where we are.

Coming three months after he underwent shoulder and wrist surgery, Rea added that he feels in top condition ahead of the new season.

“I always worry that you might lose some speed or talent over the winter but it hasn't been the case and we've reconfirmed that my wrist is perfect and my shoulder's good.

“It's exactly what I needed before I head off to Australia on Tuesday where my trainer's meeting me to get some sunshine and get me properly prepared.
