Kawasaki edging towards the front in Portugal

Kawasaki gives its best indication yet that it will be a reckoned force in World Superbikes this season.
Tom Sykes has described his best lap time of the World Superbike Championship test at Portimao as 'decent' after coming away just two tenths of a second off the ultimate pace.

The Japanese manufacturer arrived in Portugal with high expectations having undergone an intense private testing programme during the winter, with Sykes displaying the fruits of its labour by claiming the fourth fastest time overall.

Even so, though arguably Kawasaki's best pre-season showing in several years, Sykes was refusing to get carried away, adding the wet set-up still needs some work.

“Overall, not too bad in the dry. We were just two tenths off, which I am not saying is fantastic, but at the end of the day we were doing decent times. In the wet we still have some work to do, but it was still positive in the wet.

“I am pleased with test if not the weather conditions, but we confirmed the general direction we have been going in with set-up, so we can now go to Phillip Island with more parts that will help us in a few areas. We will do the two official test days in Australia and then we go racing.”
