Ducati form tough to repeat, says Marinelli

Carlos Checa was the dominant force in Australia, but Marinelli says the circuit characteristics helped its cause.
Ernesto Marinelli says Ducati's domination of the opening World Superbike Championship round at Phillip Island will not be easily repeated at other venues in 2011.

The former Ducati Xerox team manager, who now acts as Ducati Corse's Superbike technical director, was delighted with Carlos Checa's two race wins in Australia, but insists the sweeping Phillip Island circuit plays to the 1098R's strengths.

With this in mind, Marinelli is cautious when predicting how much that performance is indicative of the bike's form for the remainder of the season.

"Phillip Island is a circuit that adapts well to the characteristics of our 1198. The developments made in the last couple of years have led to very good grip in the early and mid acceleration phase and in the long fast curves of Phillip Island this helps a lot.

“But the job done by Carlos and the entire Althea team was also fundamental. Checa's strategy was good, the bike was perfect and they made the right choice of tyres.

“We struggled a bit on the straight because our twin-cylinder doesn't have the same acceleration as the fours but Carlos was very quick at the start and managed to pull out a slight advantage that proved to be decisive."

Looking ahead to the remaining circuits on the calendar, Marinelli is mourning the loss of Valencia from the calendar, which has been replaced by Motorland Aragon.

"Checa and the other Ducati riders suffer on the faster tracks. If we want to win the title we have to attack on the twisty circuits. Unfortunately this year we don't have Valencia, which was another ideal track for us, it's been replaced by Aragon which has a long straight... "

Checa currently heads the standings with a perfect points' haul of 50 points, though his Ducati counterparts – Sylvain Guintoli, Jakub Smrz and Maxime Berger – suffered tougher race days in Australia.

Ducati cant complain about topspeed, the bike pull so hard out of the corners, and up to 300+. What they lose? 3-4mph. All the other factory's are lacking topspeed against the Aprilia!
