Sykes expecting a better show at Donington Park

Tom Sykes believes he will be in the hunt for a strong result this weekend as the World Superbike Championship returns to Donington Park.
Tom Sykes believes the second round of the World Superbike Championship at Donington Park is an ideal opportunity for Kawasaki to show the advances it has made on the competition since switching to the new ZX-10R.

Following a solid, if unspectacular, debut with the bike at Phillip Island, Sykes has higher hopes for his home event at Donington Park, scene of his spectacular run to second place aboard a BSB-specification Suzuki in 2008.

Claiming the anticipated inclement weather conditions are bound to suit both himself and the Paul Bird Motorsport-run team – both of whom built their reputation competing in the cooler climes of the UK racing scene -, Sykes believes this opens Kawasaki up to a potentially strong result this weekend.

“I'm obviously looking forward to Donington, not just because it is my home round but it is a circuit I really enjoy,” Sykes, who is eighth in the standings, said. “We still need to keep working on the development of the bike so going to Donington is probably a good thing. Both the team and myself know what we need to make the bike work well round this track, so that will help us in our development stage.

“I am more confident this year that we can put on a better show for the British fans. I am very lucky in that I have a good fan base and hopefully I can repay them with something good this weekend.

"Everybody on the grid is in the same boat and at this time of year it will be cold around Donington. The team and I also have good experience there in a variety of conditions so I am looking forward to it. It is a good track for us at this stage of the new Ninja ZX-10R's race development.”

So much respect to the dude. Never giving up, always trying his best. Tom's put a tremendous effort since joining WSBK and I think it'd be fair for him to stand on the podium on Sunday. GO SYKES!

I'd LIKE to see Sykesy standing on the podium. But I reckon he'll probably be fairly happy just to see a steady progression up the placings. Its a much better bike than last year's ZX10 but the settings are going to be a fair bit different and they haven't much data for it yet.
