Carlos Checa says he is particularly happy with his run to pole position at Donington Park for the second round of the World Superbike Championship, claiming he wasn't necessarily expecting it.

The Spaniard won the position with a margin of three tenths over Leon Haslam, Checa using the cool conditions to get two laps out of the softer Pirelli.

Having romped to double victory at Phillip Island from pole position, Checa is well placed to extend his lead at the top of the standings. However, the Althea Ducati rider is keeping a close eye on the conditions, adding that no decision has yet been made on the choice of race tyre.

"We've been making constant improvement over the last two days and the small changes made along the way have paid off, the tyres worked well this afternoon and I was able to make the fast lap. The new qualifying tyre allowed us to make two fast laps and in the cold which isn't easy.

I hope the conditions don't get worse but in the meantime I'm just going to enjoy this moment."
