Checa expecting to be competitive everywhere

The Spaniard has won three of the first four races, which he believes is indicative of his pace as a whole.
Carlos Checa is confident he can maintain his superb start to the 2011 World Superbike Championship in his quest to claim this year's title.

The Spaniard has been the man to beat during the opening two rounds, scoring a pair of pole positions, three race wins and a further podium.

Establishing a 19 point lead over Marco Melandri in the standings, Checa's continuing form comes despite comments made by Ducati Superbike technical director Ernesto Marinelli pre-Donington Park that circuits such as Phillip Island exaggerate the pace of the 1098R.

Indeed, while Checa admits venues like Monza and Silverstone, which highlight the twin-cylinder bike's comparatively low straight-line speed, he is confident the package is amongst the best everywhere else.

“I have a very strong feeling, but I know Australia was a positive circumstance that allowed me to win, but now we need to grow and build those aspects into other tracks,” he told Crash.net. “We need to work in different areas to see what helps and what doesn't.

“I am quite confident. I am comfortable with the bike, the base is good and I think we can be competitive everywhere, except maybe Monza, or fast tracks like Brno and Silverstone were the power is more [important].”

Pressed on the issue of power, a recurring complaint in recent years, Checa concedes he is having to push particularly hard in corners to make up for the loss of time down a straight.

“When you are fighting someone else and you are a similar speed, they can overtake me and I can't overtake them. It's like that every lap. We need to use our strong points, the slipstream and the strategies…But every single straight we are losing – so we must carry more speed mid-term and exit faster to compensate.”

When they have to change the rules every few years to accommodate twins, that is not racing. It's politics. Ducati already has a 1000cc 4 they can homologate! Yet their decision to keep twins for "tradition" follows HD history. Before the Superbike formula became popular, dirt track was the most popular formula in the USA. It was dominated by Harley until Honda entered in the 80's and humiliated HD. Until AMA slapped a 25 pound weight requirement on Honda- WTF. Honda quit because the rules were not fair, and now dirt track is a Harley side-show. Meanwhile HD owners are so proud to be riding v-twin heritage. what a joke.
