Melandri down and out at Assen

Marco Melandri drops behind Max Biaggi in the overall standings after managing just a single fourth place finish at Assen.
Marco Melandri was disappointed to miss out on a podium finish during the third round of the World Superbike Championship at Assen after crashing out in race two.

Following on from his maiden WSBK victory at Donington Park, Melandri maintained a fairly low profile in both races as he worked his way up from eighth position on the grid, the Italian having crashed during Superpole.

Good enough for fourth in race one – albeit some distance behind the podium -, Melandri was on the tail of third place man Jonathan Rea early on in race two and was primed for an attack when he went down with six laps remaining.

A costly retirement that saw him lose second place in the overall standings to Max Biaggi, the Yamaha rider is now hoping to move on from the troublesome weekend.

“I got a bad start in race one and seemed to be losing feeling in the rear of the bike. By the time I had regained feeling and a good race pace it was too late to push for the podium.

“In race two the bike seemed to have a better set up and I managed to get a good start off the grid. I closed in on the leading pack but after the first ten laps I started losing grip in the rear tyre.

“I was keeping an eye on Rea and was planning to close in on him in the last laps but unfortunately without even realising it, I lost the front and crashed out. I'm very disappointed with this and hope it doesn't happen again.”
