Carlos Checa has sent out an ominous warning to rivals hoping to reduce his advantage at the top of the World Superbike Championship standings by declaring that he expects to be strong at Misano.
The Spaniard's double victory last time out at Miller Motorsports Park has seen him open up a 61 point advantage over Marco Melandri at the top of the standings after just five events and ten races.
However, while key title rivals Melandri and Max Biaggi will be competing on home soil at Misano, Checa insists the circuit will be a strong venue for the Althea Ducati team having completed a substantial amount of mileage there in testing.
Indeed, Checa is confident he will be similarly competitive during the race weekend, even if he admits the weather could make things somewhat unpredictable.
“Misano is a strong track for us. We carried out testing here after the Monza race and the results were very positive, very constructive. During those tests we made some improvements to the bike and so I'm feeling very confident ahead of this next race.
“It will depend on the tyres that will be made available; we'll see if they provide the same sensation as we had in testing. We know who will be strong, it's a track where Melandri, Biaggi and Corser go very well – it will undoubtedly be a close race! I'm hoping for good weather as, after the unstable conditions at Miller, it would be nice to race in the sun.”
