Max Biaggi says he is pleased to secure second on the grid at Motorland Aragon, even if he believes tyres will be a more definitive factor during the two World Superbike Championship races.
Scorching weather conditions have rendered all previous data acquired during testing last October relatively useless, meaning Biaggi and Aprilia Alitalia have been building up throughout the weekend.
Indeed, the conditions are expected to take their toll on the tyres in the races, with Biaggi saying hard tyres will compromise performance too much and soft tyres could fade dramatically.
"We worked very hard with my team looking for the best possible set-up and also exploring various avenues to improve our situation,” he said. “Unfortunately all of the information we logged during the autumn tests was useless because of the different conditions which we found this time.
“Sure, I'm pretty happy about the second place, but the two races tomorrow will be long and difficult, especially with the unknown factor of how the tyres will react to the heat and how long they will last.
“We have no choice because a switch to harder tyres would compromise performance too much. Anyway, this is what we have to work with, so we'll bring out the most of what we have.”
