Biaggi thrilled to deny Melandri

The Italian reduces Checa's lead to 30 points with five events and ten races still remaining.
Max Biaggi says the lessons learnt from missing out on victory during the opening World Superbike race at Brno helped him make amends during the second encounter.

The Italian recorded a second win of the season around the Czech circuit after fending off the late attentions of Marco Melandri, Biaggi rebuffing a pass by his rival on the penultimate lap to reclaim the lead and hold on to the chequered flag.

A satisfying win for Biaggi, who saw his hopes of the win in the first race dashed by a daring move from Melandri with three laps remaining, he claims he was determined not to let his countryman snatch the win away from his for the second time.

"Everyone was expecting this victory and now I am very happy for me, for Aprilia and for my many fans here. but it was certainly not easy,” he said. “Let's just say that race one taught me something. I would have liked to have been faster there in the last laps, but that's not always possible. So, along with my team, which did some excellent work, we decided to make a few changes to my RSV4. Just some small details that, in races like these, can make all the difference.

“I tried to maintain a pace which would break away from Melandri, but when I saw at the end that he was still there, I prepared for a direct battle. When he overtook me I didn't think for an instant about letting up. I looked for a hole to overtake him as soon as I could and then I pushed it to the maximum. I wanted this victory too much.”

Reducing Carlos Checa's advantage in the overall standings by 13 points to an increasingly manageable 30 points, Biaggi was pleased to be within striking range of his rival, but concedes the Spaniard has some positive events coming up.

"It is still a long championship and Checa has a lot of advantages,” he added. “There are tracks ahead which are more favourable for him and even here he did very well. But we are very determined. We'll try to be consistent and not to let up, right down to the very end".

You could hardly call Biaggi a motogp reject...Kallio or De Angelis are motogp rejects.....Biaggi's record in Gp's is pretty special, he ran Doohan close to the title in his debut year winning his first race first time out. Ran Rossi very close in 2001....He is the only other guy to win on a 990 M1 besides Rossi, one of three men (him,Rossi,Stoner) to win on different manufacturers in the four stroke era...he won races on every bike he rode in Gp's.....the best rider to never win the title by far.... If he is a reject then what do you see when you look in the mirror?!?!?!?!?!?!?!get a life please these guys have raised the standard in SBK's to a near GP standard, its up to the others to raise their game. If they can't beat Biaggi at 40 how will they beat Stoner at 25????
