Muggeridge out of Silverstone

The Australian was not badly hurt in the cycling accident but is choosing to focus on his regular IDM Superbike ride.
Karl Muggeridge will not make his World Superbike Championship comeback as planned at Silverstone this weekend after injuring himself just days from being announced as the replacement for Ruben Xaus at Castrol Honda.

The Australian, a former World Supersport champion, had been due to make his first WSBK start since the end of the 2009 season after being called up to stand in for Xaus, who is recovering from injuries sustained in an fall at Brno.

However, a cycling accident whilst on vacation with his family in Italy has left Muggeridge nursing a wrist injury. Though there is no fracture, Muggeridge has been forced to shelve his WSBK plans so he can concentrate on getting back to fitness for his German IDM Superbike title challenge.

Despite the short notice, Castrol Honda will still compete at full strength at Silverstone, with Fabrizio Lai coming in as his replacement. The Italian has made eight WSBK starts for the Echo CRS team, most recently at Monza this season.

“We're all very sorry for Karl, as we were really looking forward to working with him again this weekend,” said team manager Ronald ten Kate. “However, we understand that he needs to be fit for the next IDM round to fight again for the title. So, we have a replacement for Ruben's replacement, and we will make Fabrizio welcome and work hard with him to get the best result possible at Silverstone.”

With Alex Lowes filling in for Jonathan Rea, Castrol Honda will persevere with neither of its regular riders at Silverstone this weekend.

You're missing the point Rawdawg.........Muggeridge won the IDM championship last year on a Fireblade and he is currently second in their standings, on a Fireblade......it isn't some second rate national championship either but a very competitive series with both BMW & KTM using it for works development.....with his overall depth of experience + that specific to the Fireblade his input could have been very valuable to Ten Kate.... instead you choose to get hung up on his crash history in WSB, whilst at the same time ignoring his WSS championship. Karl is still a hard, quality rider, its a pity he can't make the ride.....putting another inexperienced kid on it would be kinda pointless when they're clearly in deep sh*t at the mo...

Folks seem to be overlooking the fact that Karl is reigning IDM superbike champion, and on a Fireblade.....no mean feat in a series that has works supported BMW's & KTM's running in it. Given that experience with a good Honda it would have been interesting to hear his evaluation of the Ten Kate bike and the comparison between the brake arrangements....they run ABS in the IDM series. Pity, he was a good choice. Fabrizio Lai? Don't know about that but all of the riders put forward by other posters aren't necessarily that easily available due to sponsorship/contractual issues, have other championships they're invclved in to consider or don't want to ride what appears to be a below par bike...why risk reputation/injury for a one off ride where you're likely to be midfield at best?
