Marco Melandri heads to his third home round of the 2011 World Superbike Championship at Imola with the sole aim of keeping Carlos Checa's grasp from the crown for just another weekend.
Checa is in a position to wrap up the 2011 WSBK title at Imola having amassed a margin of 74 points over Melandri, the Spaniard needing to extend that advantage to 100 points to seal the victory with two rounds in hand.
Nonetheless, Melandri, despite having not competed at Imola for a decade, is confident he can keep Checa honest this weekend and maintain the pressure on the Althea Ducati man.
"Imola is yet another track I am unfamiliar with,” the Yamaha rider said. It has been more than ten years since I've been there. This doesn't really concern me as I have done well in other new tracks this season and hopefully, I can get good results in Imola also.
“The two days testing in Misano went well, we made some adjustments to the brake system which I have struggled with on various occasions this year and this has helped me gain more confidence on my machine. It will be an interesting race, where Checa could win the championship.
“I will give it 100 per cent and do my very best to keep the championship open, even though it won't be easy."
