PATA launches 2012 WSBK campaign

PATA Racing presents new rider Lorenzo Zanetti and the Ducati 1098R ahead of the 2012 World Superbike Championship season.
PATA Racing has officially launched its 2012 World Superbike Championship campaign, presenting its new rider Lorenzo Zanetti at the Motor Bike Expo in Italy.

The Italian team, which finished eighth in the standings with Noriyuki Haga competing on an Aprilia, has opted for a change of machinery and rider for 2012 with Superstock standout Zanetti set to ride at Ducati 1098R.

On hand to help the team reveal its mostly unchanged colours for 2012, Zanetti is looking forward to graduating to WSBK this season following his breakout year riding a BMW S1000RR in the Superstock 1000 series.

"After being with Ducati in 2010, I went to BMW last year. It was an experience that helped me grow, allowing me to get on the podium six times. It is important for me to hear that there are people who believe me but it will be difficult.

“I will have to amalgamate with the team who have many years of experience and will certainly help me to grow further.”

Zanetti will be one of seven Superbike rookies racing in WSBK this season, alongside Chaz Davies, Hiroshi Aoyama, Davide Giugliano, Raffaele de Rosa, Leandro Mercado and Niccolo Canepa.

Two reasons I assume - Haga's wages are apparently high and were already being supported by Infront, while PATA wanted a young Italian rider on the bike to push its products in Italy. Perhaps it doesn't make as much sense competitively, but a 12th place Zanetti is still probably financially better for PATA than an 8th place Haga.

I don't get why they didn't continue with Haga since he's actually ridden a Ducati, the factory one at that. May be some issues we are not aware of but Haga would've made some sense to put him back on a ducati. I hope Nitro finds a seat somewhere.
