Eugene Laverty's start to the 2012 World Superbike Championship looks to have been dealt a substantial blow after a fall during testing at Phillip Island left him with a suspected hand injury.

The Irishman was taken to hospital with a possible fracture after falling from his Aprilia RSV-4 at the high-speed first turn right-hander, while he is also feared to have suffered a concussion.

According to Speedweek, Laverty is considering returning to his native Ireland to seek further consultation, though GPOne.com has countered this by saying he will remain in an effort to focus on getting fit in time for the first race.

Laverty's fall comes two days after John Hopkins was forced to withdraw from the opening round of the World Superbike Championship in just over a week's time due to a hand injury, while Pedercini Kawasaki's David Salom is also a doubt after hurting himself in a fall during testing.
