Reigning World Supersport champion Chaz Davies made his delayed World Superbike race debut at Imola on Sunday - only to suffer this dramatic accident on lap two of the opening race (see below for the full sequence).
Sidelined from the Phillip Island season-opener by a fractured wrist, the ParkinGO Aprilia rider returned to qualify 17th out of the 25 riders at Imola - but was already up to tenth when he found Guintoli's bike blocking his path.
“After a great start I was taken out by Guintoli's bike,” said Chaz.
Although fortunately uninjured, the Welshman's RSV4 required significant repairs which were competed just minutes before race two, where the former grand prix rider crossed the line a disappointed 14th.
“I have to congratulate the team for rebuilding my bike on time,” said Davies. “Halfway through the race I suffered chattering on the rear tyre and I am obviously not satisfied with the result, even though I got two points on the first race I have finished in Superbike.”
Davies suffered an engine failure while leading comfortably in last September's Imola WSS race, delaying his title celebrations.
