Lascorz suffers serious injury in Imola fall

Joan Lascorz is transferred to the spinal injury unit of Bologna Hospital after suffering a serious fall during post-race testing at Imola.
Kawasaki Racing rider Joan Lascorz has been air-lifted to hospital after suffering a suspected fractured vertebra in a high-speed accident during post-race testing at Imola.

The 27-year-old, who scored a pair of top ten finishes during the two Imola races, was taking part in the test at the same circuit just a day later when he crashed during the closing stages of the morning session on the run to Piratella.

Necessitating a red flag, Lascorz was initially given medical assistance at the circuit, but has now been air-lifted to the spinal injury unit of Maggiore Hospital in Bologna.

The full statement [Monday] from the official World Superbike website reads:

"At 12.54 today, during the first session of official Superbike testing, the Spanish rider Joan Lascorz lost control of his Kawasaki in the uphill section of the circuit from Tosa to Piratella and crashed. The rider was immediately given medical assistance and transported to the circuit Medical Centre where, after first aid operations had been performed, a probable fracture of the vertebra was diagnosed.

“Dr. Giancarlo Caroli, the Imola circuit medical officer, therefore decided to air-lift the rider immediately to the Maggiore Hospital in Bologna by helicopter. Joan Lascorz will be recovered in the spinal injury unit of the Bologna hospital.”

An update on Lascorz's condition is due today [Tuesday].

Lascorz, who made his WSBK debut with Kawasaki in 2011, missed the final portion of the 2010 season when he suffered horrific injuries in a World Supersport collision at Silverstone, an accident that left him in hospital for more than a month.
