Sykes dominates Imola test

Tom Sykes dominates testing at Imola, but attention is focused on his Kawasaki team-mate Joan Lascorz following his serious accident earlier in the day.
Tom Sykes gave the Kawasaki Racing a brief reason to smile at the end of a difficult day as he topped the timesheets during the official post-weekend test at Imola, though his efforts were wholly overshadowed by a serious accident involving his team-mate Joan Lascorz.

The Spaniard crashed heavily during the closing stages of the morning session and was transferred to Bologna hospital where he is reportedly undergoing surgery on a fractured vertebra. A full update on his condition is expected soon.

Determined to carry on in spite of the events, Kawasaki's Sykes proceeded the dominate both the morning and afternoon sessions, his lap time of 1min 46.609secs undercutting the lap record he set on his way to pole position over the weekend.

With Sykes leading a British 1-2-3-4, Jonathan Rea was second quickest for Honda, albeit half a second slower than his countryman, while Leon Camier found good speed over the course of the day to go third for Crescent Fixi Suzuki.

With BMW's Leon Haslam fourth, Aprilia's Max Biaggi fifth and Ducati's Carlos Checa in sixth, each competing manufacturer would be represented inside the top six at the end of the day.

Elsewhere inside the top ten, Marco Melandri was seventh fastest, ahead of Eugene Laverty, Niccolo Canepa and Davide Giugliano, while Lascorz's efforts earlier in the day were still good enough for 12th.

At the bottom end of the timesheets, John Hopkins and Chaz Davies began the day with the intention of testing but opted to rest their respective hand and wrist injuries after only a handful of laps, while the four-strong Effenbert-Liberty Ducati team, PATA Ducati and Pro Ride Honda chose to skip the test altogether.

ZX10Rob The ONLY person to beat him in both races here was a, frankly, unbeatable Carlos Checa. Keep your head up sport, the win is on the way. All to best to Lascorze. I hope he recovers fast and completely.

Top 6 made up of 6 different manufacturers, how cool is that! Good to see Camier make such a huge improvement, I'm guessing its the new engine that they held back at the weekend due to lack of set up time that's made the difference. Bet they wish they'd risked and raced with it now!
