Giugliano top five nixed by fuel error

Davide Giugliano falls a lap short of scoring a maiden World Superbike top five finish when his Althea Ducati runs out of fuel.
While Carlos Checa romped to a double World Superbike Championship victory at Imola, his Althea Ducati counterpart Davide Giugliano endured an altogether different day, one that was compounded when his bike ran out of fuel just a lap from a career-best finish.

Looking to impress on home soil, Giugliano's endeavour began poorly when he was caught up in Leon Camier's accident on the opening lap, the Italian forced off circuit before eventually coming to a standstill with mechanical gremlins.

Better initial fortune in race two, however, had Giugliano in the thick of the chasing pack with the more experienced Marco Melandri and Jonathan Rea, the reigning Superstock 1000 champion raising a few eyebrows by battling past both to hold down fifth place.

However, just a lap from what would have been a breakthrough finish, Giugliano's Ducati spluttered to a stop, the team later discovering that it was short on fuel. A heart-breaking end to an otherwise strong performance, Giugliano says he is now focused on recovering for Assen.

“This is not what we wanted today. Congratulations to Carlos of course but I am so disappointed as far as my own day is concerned. After the DNF of race 1 I was hoping to take a good result in the second race. I made a fast start, making up some positions very quickly and then I battled for a few laps with Melandri who had a similar pace to me.

“On the 14th lap I got ahead of him and wanted to maintain the pace to hold fifth place. Unfortunately in the last seconds my bike came to a stop and I was unable to finish, game over. A day to forget, we go to Assen where we hope to make up for this.”
