Sylvain Barrier has taken provisional pole position for the third round of the 2012 FIM Superstock 1000 Championship at Monza, but a nasty fall threatens to unsettle his hopes of victory this weekend.
Having been comfortably fastest through FP1, Barrier continued to command the competition when Q1 got underway, lowering his benchmark to 1min 46.340secs aboard the BMW Italia.
However, the Frenchman would shortly after suffer a bad tumble at turn six, prompting a transfer to the medical centre for further checks. A full diagnosis on his condition has not been released.
Despite the accident, he was still four tenths faster than second place man Lorenzo Savadori on the Barni Ducati, who led an Italian 2-3-4 ahead of Lorenzo Baroni (BMW) and Eddi La Marra (Ducati).
Behind them, Bryan Staring made big gains between practice and qualifying to take the fifth fastest time for Pedercini Kawasaki, ahead of the BWG ZX-10R of Christoffer Bergman and the privateer Alpha BMW of Markus Reiterberger. Matthieu Lussiana, Marco Bussolotti and Jeremy Guarnoni completed the top ten.
