Ayrton Badovini feels he missed out on the chance of a maiden World Superbike Championship podium at Misano, but was otherwise content to secure only his second-ever top five finish.
The BMW Italia started both races from the front row of the grid for the first time in his career and though he couldn't maintain pace with the leaders in the early stages, the Italian would put up some staunch defence against a number of more experienced rivals.
Though a poor tyre choice that afflicted all BMW riders in the first race left him in 11th, Badovini embarked on a lengthy battle with Marco Melandri for fourth place.
Eventually losing out to the factory BMW rider to finish fifth – still his second-best ever result at WSBK level -, Badovini was nonetheless disappointed that he lost touch for a chance to challenge for a podium.
"Ending the round with a fifth place is positive because it matches the improvements we made during the weekend. I could have done better though, but in the early part of the race I lost touch with the leading pack as I was trying to pass Sykes.
“In the final laps I waited a little bit too long to try and go for the fourth place, and once the first attempt didn't go as planned I was not able to get back close enough for another try. Anyway I'm happy with the improvement we showed here at Misano.”
