Checa reaches critical point in defence

28 June 2012

Having now dropped a sizeable 60 points off the World Superbike Championship lead, reigning champion Carlos Checa returns to home soil at Motorland Aragon determined to make up ground on his flagging title defence.

The Spaniard has endured a troubled season on the Althea Ducati, his four wins – more than any other rider– being negated by several costly failures to score. In all, Checa has failed to reach the points on five occasions this year, including four crashes and one erroneous tyre choice.

As such, Checa has slipped a considerable distance behind arch rival Biaggi in the standings, but the man himself is not giving up on dreams of becoming the first rider since Carl Fogarty to secure back-to-back titles.

Beginning his resurgence in front of his home fans at Motorland Aragon, Checa will want to fare better than he did last year when he suffered his only DNF of an otherwise flawless 2011 campaign.

“We had chance during WDW to work a little on the settings of my 1198 to be as prepared for this weekend's Aragon races as possible. It's always good to race at home and I hope that the fans' enthusiasm help me to make two great results.

“Last year didn't go to plan here and so, although it won't be at all easy, I hope to make up for that now at this important point of the championship.”
