Melandri happy but concerned by heat

With temperatures rising as high as 37°C during Q1 at Motorland Aragon, pace setter Marco Melandri concedes round eight will be a tough one for the riders and the bikes.
Marco Melandri was naturally pleased to end the first day of World Superbike action at Motorland Aragon with the fastest time, though the hot conditions have prompted him to urge caution ahead of qualifying and the races.

The Italian, who tested with BMW a week prior to the start of the eighth round, was on the pace in both FP1 and Q1 as he ended the day with a best of 1min 58.608secs, four tenths up on second place Max Biaggi.

However, while he was pleased to be on top form, he says the extremely hot conditions – which peaked at 37°C in the air and 60°C on the track – is causing the tyres to fall away rapidly.

With this in mind, Melandri is hoping the remainder of the weekend will be cooler, though he is sure he can work around the conditions regardless.

“Every day is a new day but it is always important to start with a good pace. The bike is working very well here and we can focus on our target which is to get a good race rhythm so I am confident. Today it was very hot and we have never ridden in these conditions.

“We struggled with the consistency at the front of the bike. The lap times were really good, but after two laps the front tyre had already become unstable so I think that it will be difficult for everybody, because on this track with long braking in a leaning position the front is under a lot of stress.

“With these temperatures the race is going to be tough physically. Maybe it is going to be little bit cooler on Sunday, but it is okay. It is the same for everybody and I have trained very well on my fitness.”
