Kawasaki adopts new 'light' rule early

Kawasaki will race with headlamp stickers on the ZX-10R for the remainder of the 2012 season, ahead of what will become full-scale introduction for 2013.
Kawasaki Racing has revealed itself to be the first World Superbike Championship team to adopt a new rule to be applied from 2013 with the introduction of headlight stickers to its ZX-10R.

In new regulations that are yet to have been confirmed publically, the Superbikes will have to wear headlamp shaped stickers and ride on 17-inch aluminium wheels from 2013.

Part of Infront's efforts to visibly bridge the gap between the racing and road-going models, it is hoped the move will provide greater relevance for fans, as well as participating manufacturers.

Though it won't be introduced until 2013, Kawasaki has nonetheless gone ahead and adopted the rule from this weekend's Motorland Aragon round, with Tom Sykes and Loris Baz set to see out the season on the 'new-look' ZX-10R.

“We've created the new Ninja ZX-10R in this spirit and since last year we have been working hard to develop the bike and its technology,” revealed team manager Gium Roda. “In the end, this bike is the SBK racing version of the bike that we sell in the shops, and we try to improve the Ninja ZX-10R year by year. In the end, the customer benefits from our developments, no doubt about that.”

Kawasaki has long been an advocate in the attempts to better link road-going models with racing machines, explaining part of its decision to quit MotoGP as a chance to concentrate its resources on championship that was more relevant to its sales and marketing.
