Max Biaggi has resumed his place at the top of the World Superbike Championship timesheets by pacing second free practice ahead of Superpole at Motorland Aragon.

Having seen Marco Melandri set a lofty standard with his new lap record in Q2, Biaggi was in charge throughout the FP2 session as the teams fine-tuned their bikes ahead of the crucial Superpole session.

Though he was some nine tenths down on Melandri's best from Q2, series leader Biaggi still had just enough to see off Kawasaki's Tom Sykes and Aprilia team-mate Eugene Laverty by less than a tenth of a second.

Melandri was fourth fastest, some 1.4secs down on his morning efforts, while Biaggi's closest title challenger Jonathan Rea showed great gains on the Honda to pop up into the top five for the first time this weekend.

Leon Haslam was sixth quickest on the second of the BMWs, ahead of both Althea Ducati riders, Davide Giugliano leading team-mate Carlos Checa. Michel Fabrizio and Chaz Davies completed the top ten.

Going into Superpole, Sylvain Guintoli suffered a fall from his Effenbert-Liberty Ducati but was unharmed.
