eni World Superbike championship leader Max Biaggi will start Sunday's Brno round from just 14th on the grid after being caught out in the first part of Superpole.

Biaggi and his Aprilia team gambled on surviving Superpole 1 without using a soft tyre, but lost out when rival riders fitted the soft rubber and pushed Biaggi outside the top twelve.

It was of little consolation, but the Roman was denied a place in Superpole 2 by less than a tenth of a second and was only 0.616s slower than Superpole 1 leader Marco Melandri.

"The mistake today cost us quite a bit," confirmed Biaggi. "We could definitely have started closer to the front if we had used a qualifying tyre straight away like the others."

Biaggi has an incredible record at Brno stretching back to his grand prix days, but had only managed 14th and 8th in the two timed sessions prior to Superpole.

As such, he's expecting a tough time in Sunday's pair of races.

"We've struggled the whole weekend and that is very odd since we've always been fast here," said Biaggi. "Tomorrow will be hard. Starting from the fourth row on a track that rides like this one is definitely not the best place to be."

Biaggi will start round nine of 14 with a 48-point advantage over BMW's Melandri, who qualified in fifth place.

Meanwhile Biaggi's team-mate Eugene Laverty backed-up his strong Aragon form with a front row performance in Brno qualifying.

"This has been a good weekend for us so far ," said Laverty, who will start third. "We've been fast from the first sessions, continuing the positive trend we started in Aragon.

"Tomorrow we can do well, although, like everyone else, we still have some doubts about tyre choices because of the poor grip on the track.

"Hopefully the temperature will go up a bit, but in any case we're ready to give one hundred percent."
