WSBK Championship standings - Brno

Marco Melandri takes a sizeable chunk out of Max Biaggi's World Superbike Championship lead as BMW take charge in the manufacturers' standings.
While many felt Marco Melandri may look back at his Donington Park faux pas as representing a pivotal moment in his World Superbike title challenge, his double victory at Brno may well turn out to be the more decisive moment in his 2012 campaign.

Since breaking his and BMW's victory at duck at Donington Park, Melandri's confidence has soared and while the fact he only led three laps during the entire day at Brno meant his double success wasn't exactly a walkover, he made sure he led as much as he needed to.

With Max Biaggi failing to make it onto the podium, Melandri has reduced the lead in the overall standings from 48 points to a more manageable 21 points, marking the first time the Aprilia rider has been pegged back since he assumed the top spot back at Assen.

Despite leading the majority of both races, Tom Sykes had to settle for second-best, though the Kawasaki rider's reward for producing his most convincing weekend of the season so far is a move from fifth back up to third. Carlos Checa holds station in fourth, with Jonathan Rea dropping back after scoring just four points.

Sylvain Guintoli's enforced absence means Davide Giugliano and Chaz Davies are closing on him for eighth overall, while Loris Baz's maiden WSBK podium has launched him from 19th overall to 16th and on the cusp of riders who had a four round head-start over him.

Perhaps even bigger news than Melandri making in-roads into Biaggi's lead is BMW's jump from third to first in the manufacturers' standings, a historic landmark since this is the first time the German marque has topped the standings since it joined the series in 2009.
