Camier shines in the gloom at Silverstone

Leon Camier turns his Superpole fortunes around by very nearly claiming his first-ever World Superbike Championship pole position at Silverstone.
Leon Camier admits he is disappointed to fall just four hundredths short of giving himself the perfect birthday present during Superpole for his home World Superbike race at Silverstone, but was otherwise pleased to turn his flagging qualifying fortunes around.

The FIXI Crescent Suzuki rider came to his home event desperate to improve his Superpole performances having not cracked the top ten in the last four events.

However, with a strong record around Silverstone and the Crescent team benefitting from knowledge of racing at Silverstone twelve months ago, Camier has been in strong contention throughout the weekend and went into Superpole having topped FP2.

Cruising into SP2 despite the treacherous weather, Camier took advantage of the improving conditions to set an eventual 2mins 20.846secs lap, which initially looked good enough to claim his first-ever pole position.

As it happens, Smrz would shave four hundredths off that time with his last gasp effort, but while Camier couldn't help but be disappointed to miss out on a landmark result, he was thrilled to be at the front of the grid again having struggled over a single lap for much of the season.

“With Superpole coming to a close, I really thought that I had won it because there was so little time remaining, but then Smrz went faster and ruined my birthday,” the Briton, who turned 26 today, joked. “Although winning Superpole would've been good, it's a great feeling to be on the front row of the grid at last.

“It's been a long time coming, but we always believed we could do it. The boys have worked so hard to make the bike better and the improvements in the engine and the electronics have allowed me to be competitive again.

“My race pace has been good in the wet and the dry and we've got good set-ups for both conditions. So, if it is either dry or wet, we're ready! I hope it's going to be dry because I think the racing will be better and it'll be good for the fans as well.”

im pretty heard on the eurosport commentary that the team have found an extra 15bhp from the engine. I imagine Leon is pleased with that little birthday present! Really wanted the Suzukis to go well this year, maybe at last we have a chance.
