Berger hits back with best result on Red Devils debut

9 October 2012

Maxime Berger's tumultuous World Superbike Championship campaign was brought to a fitting conclusion at Magny-Cours when he notched up his and Red Devils Roma Ducati's best results of the season on his debut outing with the team.

The Frenchman has spent much of his sophomore campaign with the Effenbert Liberty Ducati team, scoring a best finish of fifth in the wet at Silverstone, but followed Sylvain Guintoli and Jakub Smrz in being unceremoniously axed from the controversial team with just two events to go.

Nonetheless, while Effenbert Liberty were not present at the final round, Berger landed at fellow Ducati team Red Devils Roma as a replacement for the injured Niccolo Canepa.

Doubling up as his home round, Berger settled in quickly to show well in free practice and make it into Superpole. Capitalising on the tough conditions of the first race, Berger focused on staying composed as others fell around him, a tactic that helped him cross the line in fourth position.

His best-ever finish in 49 World Superbike starts, as well as a notable improvement on Red Devils Roma's previous best of seventh, Berger was delighted to get the opportunity to end his year on a high.

"In race one I managed to win my best result of this season which is also the best result ever achieved by Red Devils Roma in Superbike. With the track completely wet I decided to go with caution and when I saw many riders fall, I tried not to make the slightest mistake. When I realised that the track was drying I pushed hard and I finished fourth.

“In race two I struggled to find a good rhythm and I was not able to take advantage of the electronics on the Ducati. We are still very happy, not only for the results obtained, but because I only had two days to work with my new team and with this bike and I think I gave my best.

“I want to thank the Red Devils Roma team that gave me confidence and all the guys of the technical staff that I have provided a motorcycle really competitive which has enabled me to make a good impression in front of my fans.”
