Melandri fastest for BMW at Jerez

'We tested a lot of things, for example regarding electronics and got a clear understanding which direction we have to take' - Marco Melandri
Marco Melandri headed the times on the second and final day of the World Superbike test at Jerez in Spain.

The Goldbet BMW rider's best lap of 1m 40.758s put him ahead of Davide Giugliano by 0.104s, who had topped the timing charts in the wet on Monday on his Althea Aprilia RSV4.

However, Kawasaki claimed in an official press statement that Tom Sykes – last year's championship runner-up – had set the fastest lap on his ZX10R in 1m 40.5s, although neither Sykes nor teammate Loris Baz's machines were fitted with transponders.

Northern Irishman Eugene Laverty was third quickest on the factory Aprilia, 0.285s adrift of former Yamaha teammate Melandri, with Leon Camier (Fixi Crescent Suzuki), Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda) and Laverty's teammate, Sylvain Guintoli, rounding out the leading six as the final day of the shakedown was blessed with dry weather after persistent rain had previously hampered testing at the Spanish circuit.

Pacesetter Melandri says he already feels 'prepared' for the opening round of the world championship at Phillip Island in Australia next month.

“Today was a very good day and we could work a lot. As over the winter break I was struggling with a shoulder injury, it was not too bad that we had wet conditions yesterday because I could do some laps and train the shoulder without too much pressure,” he said.

“Today was very positive and I think we are well prepared for Phillip Island. We tested a lot of things, for example regarding electronics and got a clear understanding which direction we have to take.

“Of course, there is still work to do but especially with the chassis and the electronics we made a good step," added Melandri.

“Overall, I will head to Australia in a very confident and happy mood.”

Alstare Ducati's Carlos Checa and Ayrton Badovini also tested at Jerez from Saturday to Monday, but managed just three hours on track as a result of rain and breezy conditions.
