Checa quickest at damp Phillip Island

Carlos Checa put the new Alstare Ducati 1199 Panigale to the top of a World Superbike timesheet for the first time as official testing continued at a damp Phillip Island.

A contrast to the scorching conditions experienced on day one of the test, rainy weather and cooler temperatures greeted the riders at the start of the second and final day. As such, several riders – including Leon Camier and Eugene Laverty – chose to stay in the pit lane, leaving Checa to set the pace instead.

Playing catch up after missing last week's 'unofficial' test due to a virus, Checa – who has won four of the last five WSBK races to be held at Phillip Island – was the busiest rider on track, notching up 17 laps to be comfortably quicker than his more reluctant rivals.

With conditions improving steadily as the two-hour session wore on, Checa got his lap time down to 1min 32.777secs, around 1.5secs slower than Camier's pace setting time on day one.

BMW's Marco Melandri was second fastest, albeit seven tenths further adrift, ahead of Sylvain Guintoli, Jonathan Rea and Loris Baz, the Frenchman looking more comfortable on the slippery surface having struggled in the dry thus far.
