Aprilia duo up momentum with Jerez test

Aprilia: In the racing world if you snooze you lose, especially if you base everything on a single, albeit excellent, result...
Determined not to rest on their laurels after a hugely successful 2013 World Superbike Championship opener at Phillip Island, Aprilia Racing's Eugene Laverty and Sylvain Guintoli have been back on track at Jerez to complete more testing mileage.

The pair currently sit at the top of the standings after claiming a victory and a second place apiece at Phillip Island, but with a lengthy six week gap between the Australian event and the second round at Motorland Aragon, Aprilia have arrived in Spain already in an effort to maintain that winning momentum.

Over two days, Laverty posted 140 laps and turned in a best lap of 1min 41.47secs, with Guintoli recording a 1min 42.79secs. For comparison, Marco Melandri recorded a 1min 40.7secs lap time during pre-season testing, while Kawasaki claimed Tom Sykes – who was running without transponders – lapped in 1min 40.5secs.

Using the test as an opportunity to hone the set-up of the RSV4, Aprilia sports director believes the two days were crucial so as not to 'snooze and lose'.

"We certainly got off on the right foot at Phillip Island with results that provide us with confirmation of the good job we did over the winter break,” he said. “However, in the racing world if you snooze you lose, especially if you base everything on a single, albeit excellent, result. We are fully aware that not every weekend will be like the one in Australia, so we will keep working on the RSV4 and testing new solutions that will allow us to gain some precious tenths of a second."

"These tests are also important for the riders" he continued. "A long break between the first and second round could lead to a drop in tension. I must say that Eugene and Sylvain are two great professionals. They are very skilled at enhancing and developing the work done by our engineers and mechanics. This is an excellent calling card for the rest of the season."
