Haslam back to full fitness after leg surgery

Pata Honda's Leon Haslam is looking ahead to two tests at the beginning of April after undergoing surgery to repair damaged nerves he suffered when he broke his leg at Phillip Island in 2012.

Haslam underwent an operation a few weeks ago and will now be able to train more vigorously to boost his fitness levels for the long and arduous World Superbike campaign ahead.

“I got one nerve removed and one repaired from when I broke my leg last year in Australia,” Haslam told the World Superbike website.

“One of the nerves was trapped in the hole that was there when the screw was removed and one of the other nerves was damaged with the removal of the screw.

“It's something that's been injuring me since Christmas, I had a lot of pain through it.

“The strength and everything have been there, it's just been quite frustrating because I wasn't able to train like I wanted to,” he added.

“I'll just wait for the scar to stick together and once it happens it'll be back to normal.”

Haslam made a promising start with his new Honda team at Phillip Island in Australia last month and feels he was denied the chance to finish on the rostrum in race one before bad luck struck in race two when he was caught up in Chaz Davies crash.

“I was happy of the progress we made, it could have been a third place in both races, definitely a fourth with the pace we had,” he said.

“In race one we had a problem with the traction control – it basically went into safety mode halfway through the race; it's something we knew there was a problem with and the guys are resolving it.

“I'm confident it'll be fine for the next race. It was brand new software, brand new electronics and we had a lot done during the test and the race weekend,” added Haslam.

“At one point during the race I got up to second place after passing most of the guys. I was quite happy but very disappointed for the results we got.

“Race two was just misfortune getting caught in Chaz's crash.”

Haslam and team-mate Jonathan Rea will complete two Spanish tests at Aragon from April 2-4 and Alcarras from April 7-8 before the second world championship round at Aragon on April 14.

The pair will experiment with upgrades to the new electronics system being used by the Pata Honda team this season.
