WSBK Aragon 2013: Rea pinning hopes on extra test boost

10 April 2013

Jonathan Rea is optimistic the decision to conduct an extra test ahead of the second World Superbike round at Motorland Aragon will pay dividends as the Pata Honda team work to get to the bottom of their persistent electronic woes.

The Ulsterman and team-mate Leon Haslam have been vocal about issues with the bike's new electronics package during pre-season testing and the opening round at Phillip Island, but a recent three-day test at Aragon produced 'zero progress'.

As such, the Honda team opted to spend two more days testing at Alcarras and Rea is confident it is now beginning to yield the desired results, even if he won't know until he goes up against his rivals this weekend.

“We have certainly made some progress the last few days at Alcarras but it'll be difficult to tell just how much until we're back riding against our rivals at Aragon on Friday. I've got a good feeling with the bike now and my confidence is certainly higher than when we left the Aragon test last week where we really made zero progress.

“We've been working hard on all aspects of the new electronics system and made some in-roads at Alcarras. Our engine braking particularly is now more consistent and I can hit apexes more precisely, whereas during the Aragon test, I felt a bit like a passenger at times.

“We were definitely a bit lost there but now we can head back to Aragon with more confidence and see where we are on Friday.”

Hampered by his electronics woes, Rea managed just a pair of eighth place finishes during the opening round of the season at Phillip Island.
