WSBK Aragon 2013: Laverty heads off Davies in Q1

Eugene Laverty leaves it late to deny Chaz Davies in Q1 at Motorland Aragon, with Tom Sykes, Marco Melandri and Jonathan Rea following up behind them.

Eugene Laverty has picked up from where he left from Australia by ending the opening day of World Superbike action at Motorland Aragon with the quickest lap time.

The Irishman, who had played down suggestions that Aprilia's decision not to test at the Spanish circuit last week would prove a disadvantage, waited until his final lap to soar to the head of the timesheets, his lap of 1min 58.548secs just enough to depose Chaz Davies.

Indeed, BMW rider Davies had looked on course to finish the day in 'provisional pole position' after producing three quick laps in the final stages to put distance between himself and his rivals. However, just as Marco Melandri did to him in FP1, Laverty would sneak ahead at the death.

Behind Davies, Tom Sykes was third quickest on the factory Kawasaki, ahead of Marco Melandri and Jonathan Rea, the Ulsterman hinting that Pata Honda might be finally getting to grips with its problematic electronics package by going fifth best.

Laverty's team-mate Sylvain Guintoli rounded out the top six, ahead of Leon Camier, who brought the Q1 session to a brief halt early on when he suffered a crash at turn ten. Taken to the medical centre, Camier was still classified seventh fastest despite completing just three laps.

His team-mate Jules Cluzel was eighth best, with Loris Baz and Davide Giugliano rounding out the top ten on their respective Kawasaki and Aprilia machines.

Behind them, the fight to make Superpole will kick off in Q2 with Ayrton Badovini and Alexander Lundh currently firmed in 14th and 15th. However, both look fairly safe as it stands, with five tenths between Lundh and Max Neukirchner, while Federico Sandi and Vittorio Iannuzzo are a further three and six tenths further back respectively.

The Ducati's still being developed, so no need to write it off just yet. Its rare for the Dukes to ever be the quickest thing through a speed trap, but its never stopped them winning. The Panigale though 'behaves' a lot more like a 4 though perhaps, so maybe its old advantages of drive and fast acceleration out of corners has been lost a bit? I'm happy to see that Chas is right up there and proving his quality yet again. He's my man to watch this year - he's gonna take a few scalps and worry a few riders IMO. Laverty is looking vv strong though. If Grinner's pace translates to race distances then he'll be up there too I think.
