Tom Sykes has moved himself to the top of the timesheets ahead of Superpole for the second round of the 2013 World Superbike Championship at Motorland Aragon after comfortably topping Q2.

The first rider of the weekend to break into the 1min 57secs bracket, Sykes quickly progressed from his overnight position of third place to move fastest within ten minutes of the Q2 session getting underway.

From here he would steadily improve his lap time to end the session with an eventual 1min 57.785secs lap, a good three tenths up on Q1 pace setter Eugene Laverty on the factory Aprilia.

Though a fairly static session in terms of the finishing order, nearly each rider improved on their lap times from Q1 with Jonathan Rea lifting himself to third place on the Pata Honda, while Chaz Davies continued to lead the BMW charge in fourth place.

Davide Giugliano made the biggest gains between sessions to haul himself up to fifth fastest on the Althea Aprilia, ahead of factory counterpart Sylvain Guintoli, with Marco Melandri and Loris Baz chasing them in seventh and eighth.

A testament to his impressive lap in Q1 before crashing and dislocating his knee, Leon Camier remained ninth fastest by the end of Q2 but he was not present on track for the session and will not participate in the remainder of the round.

His Fixi Crescent Suzuki team-mate Jules Cluzel rounded out the top ten, ahead of Michel Fabrizio and Leon Haslam, who were fortunate to stay out of the drop zone after both suffering accidents during the session. Indeed, Haslam was particularly lucky as his crash at turn two in the early stages prevented him from even setting a time in Q2.

Behind them, Ducati's three Panigale representatives – Carlos Checa, Ayrton Badovini and Max Neukirchner – will progress to Superpole, despite giving away up to 22kph to the fastest bike (Laverty's Aprilia) in terms of top speed.

Outside the top fifteen, Alexander Lundh, Federico Sandi, Ivan Clementi, Mark Aitchison and Vittorio Iannuzzo will start in positions 16th to 20th after missing the Superpole cut.
