WSBK Donington: Laverty bounces back with Donington podium

26 May 2013

Eugene Laverty believes he has reason to be pleased leaving the fifth round of the World Superbike Championship at Donington Park after picking up his first podium around the British circuit.

With a best finish of just 14th place in two years of WSBK racing at Donington Park, Laverty was under pressure to improve on his record coming into race day.

However, after qualifying on the front row, Laverty was left disappointed in race one when an early mistake left him fighting it out in the chasing pack, the Irishman eventually picking up seventh.

Despite this set back, Laverty would return to form in race two by prevailing in a late tussle with Marco Melandri for third position to claim first podium at Donington Park.

“At the end of Race one I was disappointed. I have always had trouble on this track, but I could have done better than seventh place. On the other hand Race 2 got off to a better start straight away. A few changes we made to my RSV4 between the two races immediately increased my feeling with it.

“In fact, I was able to defend third place against Melandri's attacks, and as I said at Monza, it's always nice to end the weekend with a podium. The performance in race two is encouraging for the rest of the championship.

“It shows that even on shorter, more winding tracks we can keep up with the top riders. I like Portimao, I was strong there last year so I'm looking forward to the next round.”

Laverty is currently third in the WSBK standings, 24 points adrift of Aprilia team-mate Sylvain Guintoli.
