Jonathan Rea has suffered a suspected broken femur following his dramatic accident towards the end of the first World Superbike race at the Nurburgring.

The Ulsterman was running fourth with just over a lap to go when his bike slid on oil dropped by Federico Sandi's expiring Pedercini Kawasaki at turn nine.

A high-speed incident that sent man and machine barrelling into the barriers, Rea has been transferred to the local hospital for checks, though the official PATA Honda Twitter feed revealed that he has suffered a suspected broken femur.
